World class country

Brazil, the fifth largest country in the world, is a truly fascinating country with many extremes and contrasts: mangrove woods, colonial churches and architectural monuments influence the country as deep as materialism, spiritualism and a huge gap between poverty and wealth. The cultural and scenic diversity also reflects in the population. Brazilians are generally described as very proud people with a spirited nature, who love festivals and dancing. Their hospitality is certainly unique, but the Brazilians have many more reasons to be proud of their country. As five times winner of the World Cup it is the most successful football nation in the world! On top of that, a new windsurfing star also comes from this huge and exciting country. His name is “Marcilio Browne“. Many of you have certainly already heard of him, and our destination is more or less his home, and one of the best and windiest spots in Brazil. 

There are a lot of reasons for visiting Brazil, but for us windsurfers and kitesurfers it is of course the wind that magically attracts us - and there is plenty of it in Brazil! While surfing a tube is the ultimate experience for surfers, the holy grail for windsurfers and kitesurfers is to find a spot with a wind guarantee.......

In the northernmost part of the country, in the state Ceara, is the small fishing village Preá, only 10 km south of the windsurfing mecca Jericoacoara, a place that many of you have certainly already heard of. Some years ago we were already at this spot, fascinated by the vastness, the endless beaches, the beautiful landscape and the very steady winds. At that time we used to be the only surfers on the water. There was only the small fishing village Preá, ample space, steady wind but no hotels or surfing centres. Of course, things have changed considerably since then! You can stay directly on the spot in the Vila Preá, which offers some bungalows and one of the best restaurants, or in Jericoacoara in the Vila Bela Vista or Vila Kalango. Amongst the numerous pousadas (hotels), these two are the nicest in Jeri, and here you will feel comfortable and can enjoy your holiday to the full. We offer you a daily shuttle service between your pousada in Jeri and the centre in Preá.

The spot in Preá
We opened a kitesurfing centre in Preá in the summer of 2002. It is located directly on the long, fine-grained sandy beach in front of the hotel Vila Preá. Here the heart of the centre is located: two wooden buildings with reception, storage and nice changing and sanitary facilities. Directly on the beach you can find a "Baracca", a small hut, equipped with hammocks and a beach bar, where snacks, delicious sandwiches, fresh juices and coffee and cake are on offer. Here you can relax and refill your energy tanks while looking at the beautiful beach of Preá or watching other kiters on the water. Afterwards you shouldn't miss a guided downwinder – an unforgettable experience for every kitesurfer.

Wind and waves
The average windspeed reaches 15-30 knots from June through January! We recommend kite sizes between 8 and 12 square meters. There are a handful light wind days in December January and June, where you could also use a 16 sqm kite.

Waves are affected by the wind swell and moon phase. Full moon genarally brings the best swell. The biggest waves reach 2 metres. Low tide brings the flattest water conditions.

And what about windsurfing in Preá? From July until January the average wind force is 5-6 Beaufort with strong and steady winds. A long, broad beach with a sandy bottom and side shore wind from the right makes Preá not only perfect for kitesurfing but also for windsurfing.

Huge variety
The area around Preá offers even more. There is a wide range of excursions such as buggy tours to nearby lagoons, small villages and dunes. In Jericoacoara you can find a lot of restaurants, beach bars and a diverse night life in great atmosphere. In the evenings you can watch "Capoeira" on the beach and enjoy the atmosphere having a caipirinha.
