Compared to the rest of the Costa Brava, the huge, fine sandy bay of Roses is very spacious, and by far the windiest spot on the Catalan coast. Located in the south of the bay of Roses, not far from the our center, there is the medieval village of Sant Marti d’Empuries with its’ famous archeological sites. From there you can reach the small village L’Escala in the southern end of the bay via a beautiful path alongside the beach. The old town, a former fishing village, offers excellent tapas bars, restaurants, discos and nice, small boutiques. The bay of Roses has long been well-known amongst windsurfers, and now among kiters. The Windsurfing World Cup has taken place here for 7 years now. The whole region is a very interesting destination, with numerous attractions and cultural sites. Due to its vicintiy to the Pyrenees, rafting and canyoning trips can be offered. The message is clear: a thrilling and yet safe spot where everybody can make the most of their time and money, no matter whether they are wave freaks, freestylers, freeriders, kiters or kids.

The spot in Golf de Roses
For many years, the Bay of Roses has been known as the best kitesurfing spot with the most constant winds invNorthern Spain. Kitesurfing conditions could not be more ideal. The thermal wind is very reliable and builds up towards midday. The fine sandy beach, interspersed with small dunes, is about 80 m wide, and the shallow water area extends for about 30 m. The shape of the bay ensures absolute safety for kitesurfers in tramuntana and thermal wind conditions; what is more, the regular winds never blow offshore.

Kitesurfing is offically not allowed in Catalonia from June to September. Kitesurfing is permitted only in special kitesurfing zones. We succeeded to furnish one of these few zones for our center.

We offer daily kitesurfing instruction, also with the help of our motor boat, depending on the wind direction. Courses are held directly in front of the centre in our private, dedicated kitesurfing zone. In the summer months in particular, the wind conditions are ideal for beginners' instruction. The wide beach and the dedicated kitesurfing zone give you enough room to fly the kite for the first time or simply learn how to launch it. Kitesurfing instruction is offered in many different languages, and our kitesurfinstructors have international certificates.

Wind and waves
We have strong and steadily blowing tramuntana, which has a firm grip on wind and weather conditions in the vicinity of the Pyrenees. This wind is particularly strong in spring and fall (with wind forces of 5-8/9 bft.) and blows sideshore from the right at our center.
The thermal wind prevails in the summer months (mid-June to mid-September). The wind comes side-onshore from the right, with a wind force of 3-5 bft.

The center
The Smart Extreme kitesurfing center is at the south end of the bay (near St. Marti d'Empuries and L'Escala) on the grounds of La Ballena Alegre 2, a 4-star camping and bungalow park. Rentals of the latest kiteboarding equipment and kitesurf storage are further services offered by our kitesurfing center. Our fully equipped shop carries spare parts, kites, boards, accessories and the associated sportswear.

Our insider tips:

• Culture at your doorstep: the Dali Museum in Figueres is well worth a visit and anyone interested in seeing Dali's house should definitely take a trip to the picturesque township of Cadaques.
• The ruins of Empúries can be reached on foot; with their sandy beaches, the small bays provide an enticing opportunity for a swim.
• You can try the local wines and liqueurs at one of the numerous "bodegas"(wineries) and have some of your favourite wine bottled for you. In L'Escala you will find the best anchovies.
• A balloon trip early in the morning, with the sun rising behind the mountains, is a fantastically romantic experience. If you wish, you can enjoy a glass of "Cava" (Spanish champagne) at the same time.
• If you're on the lookout for action and adventure, Ampuria Brava, which boasts one of Europe's and the world's best parachuting centres, is the very place. Just the right thing for adrenalin junkies: 40 seconds' free fall.
